Let’s Go Fishing!

< Back to Pastor Gary’s Blog

Good Morning Saints of God!

Let’s go fishing! It is spring break in Humble, TX and my two little boys want to go fishing. Yesterday, one of the two asked me if there was an “X” on the worm identifying where to put the hook? Then the other got out one of the old broken down rods and started playing with it, so I guess there is probably a fishing trip around the corner.

One day Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee and he saw some men fishing and he told them, “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19). The men put down their nets and for the next three years Jesus re-taught them how to fish. From that incident we all understand that Jesus calls us all to be fishers of men. Being a fisher of men is not easy; in fact it can be very difficult at times. Like my sons, we may find ourselves looking for the “X” on the worm or we go fishing with broken equipment.

A fisher of men is not so much about the doing as it is about the being. First, a fisher of men is a follower of Jesus. Jesus said, “Follow me….” If we want to be successful at fishing for men we must learn from the Master. Second, a fisher of men is always in process of becoming. Jesus said, “I will make you….” This is a continual process; if you avail yourself to the Lord he will change you and help you to become an effective fisher. Third, a fisher of men is always fishing because no matter where you are or what you are doing you are surrounded by people.

By the way, there is an “X” on the bait. The bait we fish with is Jesus Christ. The Greek letter “X” (pronounced Chi) is the first letter of Christ in the Greek language. God, himself baited the hook. God stuck the hook right in the “X” so that all men might be saved.

Let’s go fishing!

God bless you,
Pastor Gary
